When Your Soul Feels Tired – Compassion Fatigue & Soul Care

Sarah Gaer and me in Edinburgh, UK

If you’ve ever felt completely worn down from caring too much, you’re not alone. Compassion fatigue and soul exhaustion are very real, especially for those of us in helping professions. It’s not just physical or mental tiredness—it’s the deep depletion of our spirit, making it hard to feel joy, purpose, or even hope.

I’ve been there. Twice.

2017 – When My Nonprofit Collapsed

Our suicide prevention nonprofit—named in honor of my brother—went under. It felt like waves crashing around me as I struggled with grief, failure, and uncertainty. I believed I had let down everyone who had invested in our success—and my brother’s legacy. But rather than numb out, I leaned into the soul-filling impact of partners who stood by me. I’ll never forget the colleagues who said…

"We love you, whether you succeed or fail."

2020 – The Week I Lost My Speaking Business Overnight

When COVID hit, I lost my entire ability to generate revenue in a single week. The world needed support, but I was burned out and helpless. Compassion fatigue had crept in again. Then my friend, Sarah Gaer, reminded me of "Soul Care."

We talked about it on my podcast during that difficult time:

Fast forward to today—many of us are feeling that soul exhaustion again. Maybe you are, too.

Self-Check: Are You Experiencing Soul Exhaustion?

An overwhelming desire for sleep that doesn’t relieve fatigue
Inability to experience joy or happiness
Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected
Small tasks feel overwhelming
Constant dread or feeling like life is on autopilot

Take Action: How to Replenish Your Soul

Sarah is the expert on this topic, and she reminds me often to nurture “the very deepest part of me, the essence of who I am.” I am so grateful for her wisdom and sage advice.

Instead of pushing through the exhaustion, what if we practiced intentional Soul Care? Here’s how:

  • Connect with people who remind you of your worth

  • Find awe in nature, music, or art

  • Engage in small acts of kindness to reconnect with meaning

  • Journal about what restores you

  • Embrace rituals, meditation, or silent reflection
