Keynote Announcement: Allan Abney
“From Jobsite to Hope: Combating Addiction in Construction Through Connection, Mentorship, and Mental Wellness”
Substance use and suicide rates in construction remain among the highest of any industry. Behind the long hours, heavy labor, and constant travel is a quieter reality -- workers carrying pain, isolation, addiction, and mental health struggles alone.
In this raw, real, and redemptive keynote, Allan Abney brings a powerful voice from the field. Drawing on decades of experience as a commercial roofing leader and mentor to traveling crews, Allan explores:
• Why addiction and despair take root in construction culture
• How isolation, stigma, and lack of mentorship quietly escalate risk
• What leaders and coworkers can actually do to change the trajectory
This presentation is a call for solidarity, accountability, dignity, and care for every teammate.
About Allan Abney

A committed mentor and culture-builder, Allan is passionate about developing people—not just projects—and brings both professional depth and lived perspective to his work.
Let’s build a safer, healthier, more human construction industry -- together.
